Legal Ethics and Civic Duty in Divided Times: Lessons from January 6 and Charlottesville
Legal Ethics and Civic Duty in Divided Times: Lessons from January 6 and Charlottesville
Monday, November 17, 2025 (5:30 PM - 6:45 PM) (EST)
Description
Join us on November 17 for a conversation with attorney Timothy J. Heaphy, lead investigator for the January 6 Committee and for the city of Charlottesville following the 2017 White Supremacist rally there. In his book Harbingers: What January 6 and Charlottesville Reveal About Rising Threats to American Democracy, Heaphy explores commonalities between these incidents – both were planned in the open, on social media sites; both were inspired in part by anger at institutions; and, in both cases, law enforcement was inadequately prepared for violence due to certain systemic failures. Heaphy argues that studying these facts and circumstances can help make political mayhem less likely. We’ll discuss his experiences as an investigative attorney, his suggestions for how to bridge political divides, and how each of us as a citizen can help protect our democratic society. Attendance is free but please register by November 15: https://unhconnect.unh.edu/s/1518/20/interior.aspx?sid=1518&pgid=6643&gid=4&cid=11315&ecid=11315&post_id=0Additional Info
